On Thursday, October 24, 2019, 225 guests from around the Bay Area gathered for Savor the Greenbelt, the annual fundraising gala of Greenbelt Alliance. The organization’s supporters celebrated Greenbelt Alliance at the world-renowned Fairmont San Francisco.
Bay Area philanthropists, elected officials, and thought leaders were in attendance to honor and support Greenbelt Alliance’s work to preserve open space, safeguard the region’s farms and ranches, and advance smart growth solutions across the region. The event was co-chaired by board member Craig Hartman and Jan O’Brien, along with Dan and Mimi Kingsley. Kate Gordon, Director of the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research and Senior Advisor to the Governor on Climate attended and served as the keynote speaker, discussing the economic impacts of climate change on the California economy and how we can reduce risks through adaptation.
For the third straight year, Google recognized the organization’s important work by serving as lead corporate sponsor. Additional support came from influential employers, agencies, and organizations, including City Center Bishop Ranch, SKS Partners, Carmel Partners, Dignity Health, Five Point, Hanson Bridgett LLP, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, Park Merced, Bay Area Rapid Transit, and many more.
This year marked the fourth annual Greenbelt Alliance Champion Awards, which honor individuals who have made an especially significant contribution to the organization’s mission of holistically addressing land-use issues from land conservation to smart-growth development. The 2019 honoree was Jake Mackenzie, former Chair of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, longtime Mayor of Rohnert Park, and well known steward of smart city planning. Mackenzie was honored for championing the organization’s mission: to shape the rules that govern growth, to protect the region’s open spaces, and to ensure that neighborhoods within our cities and towns are amazing places for everyone.
