The 8th Annual American Cancer Society San Francisco Discovery Gala took place on Saturday, October 5th, 2019 at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco. A dynamic team of American Cancer Society staff, over 60 volunteers, the San Francisco Associate Board of Ambassadors, sponsors, partners and the dedicated and tireless Board of Ambassadors, raised over $1.2 million in the fight against cancer. The theme of the evening was Attacking Cancer from Every Angle- representing the Society’s ongoing commitment to a holistic approach in fighting cancer from every platform possible.
This year’s San Francisco Discovery Gala was presented by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and chaired by Jon Faust, SVP & CFO Hybrid IT, HPE and John Orwin, President & CFO, Atreca. The Society honored Dr. Jonathan Berek for his contributions as the Laurie Kraus Lacob Professor at The Stanford University School of Medicine. Also, Kimberly Hammonds was recognized as the Raising Hope Honoree. Kim has actively supported the American Cancer Society, raising over $5 million in the fight against cancer, and has been a tireless advocate for raising public awareness about prevention and early detection efforts. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time and is currently receiving treatment.
American Cancer Society CEO Gary Reedy and his wife Cindy joined the festivities and presented two special awards. The 2019 ACS Discovery Gala Corporate Partnership Award was presented to Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Phil Davis, President, Hybrid IT and Jon Faust, SVP & CFO Hybrid IT, for their leadership and impact in support of the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. Also, Jose Ramos received the 2019 American Cancer Society St. George Award for excellence in volunteerism. The remarkable Jessica Aguirre, Emmy Award-winning Co-Anchor for KNTV NBC 11 Bay Area News, emceed the evening’s festivities.
It was truly a sensational night –seeing Raising Hope Honoree, Kim Hammonds, dancing on stage with the featured performer, Gin Blossoms, captured the essence of the evening perfectly.
