The 8th Annual American Cancer Society San Francisco Discovery Gala took place on Saturday, October 5th, 2019 at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco. A dynamic team of American Cancer Society staff, over 60 volunteers, the San Francisco Associate Board of Ambassadors, sponsors, partners and the dedicated and tireless Board of Ambassadors, raised over $1.2 million in the fight against cancer. The theme of the evening was Attacking Cancer from Every Angle- representing the Society’s ongoing commitment to a holistic approach in fighting cancer from every platform possible.

This year’s San Francisco Discovery Gala was presented by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and chaired by Jon Faust, SVP & CFO Hybrid IT, HPE and John Orwin, President & CFO, Atreca. The Society honored Dr. Jonathan Berek for his contributions as the Laurie Kraus Lacob Professor at The Stanford University School of Medicine. Also, Kimberly Hammonds was recognized as the Raising Hope Honoree. Kim has actively supported the American Cancer Society, raising over $5 million in the fight against cancer, and has been a tireless advocate for raising public awareness about prevention and early detection efforts. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time and is currently receiving treatment.

American Cancer Society CEO Gary Reedy and his wife Cindy joined the festivities and presented two special awards. The 2019 ACS Discovery Gala Corporate Partnership Award was presented to Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Phil Davis, President, Hybrid IT and Jon Faust, SVP & CFO Hybrid IT, for their leadership and impact in support of the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. Also, Jose Ramos received the 2019 American Cancer Society St. George Award for excellence in volunteerism. The remarkable Jessica Aguirre, Emmy Award-winning Co-Anchor for KNTV NBC 11 Bay Area News, emceed the evening’s festivities.

It was truly a sensational night –seeing Raising Hope Honoree, Kim Hammonds, dancing on stage with the featured performer, Gin Blossoms, captured the essence of the evening perfectly.

Thursday, November 7, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined civic and community leaders, project partners and philanthropists to celebrate a “groundmaking” event on the Presidio Tunnel Tops project, kicking off the 2-year construction period and celebrating the fundraising milestones to date. 200 guests gathered behind the construction fence by the Presidio Visitor Center to hear heart-felt remarks, enjoy music by the Burton High School Choir, and to share in a “groundmaking” moment, all lead by MC Renel Brooks-Moon, the voice of the San Francisco Giants. On November 3rd, The Peter Michael Foundation hosted a sold-out event of 75 guests at their 3rd annual Sunday Supper - an intimate, 4-course Peter Michael wine-paired dinner prepared by Chef Thomas McNaughton of Flour + Water, Flour + Walter Pizzeria, Central Kitchen and Salumeria. Held at Central Kitchen in the Mission, the evening generated over $125,000 for prostate cancer research at UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center. Guests were treated to Chef McNaughton’s new Californian cuisine paired with four award-winning Peter Michael wines as well as a live auction with Bonham’s Aaron Bastian.
On Thursday, October 24, 2019, 225 guests from around the Bay Area gathered for Savor the Greenbelt, the annual fundraising gala of Greenbelt Alliance. The organization’s supporters celebrated Greenbelt Alliance at the world-renowned Fairmont San Francisco. Saturday night, September 21, the newly transformed 1939 Presidio Theatre, located on the Main Post of San Francisco’s historic Presidio, threw open its doors to the public for the first time in 24 years for a rollicking, sold-out opening celebration. Six hundred attendees packed the house for dedication speeches plus high-energy performances by Beach Blanket Babylon, Leung's White Crane Dragon and Lion Dance Association, San Francisco Girls Chorus and Te Mano O Te Ra Tahitian dance and music. The event went long into the night with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and high spirits. The Theatre is the result of a gift from the Margaret E. Haas Fund to restore and expand the facility and return it to the public for a wide variety of uses including live music, theater, dance, film, lectures, and events. Peggy Haas took to the stage and lovingly launched the gorgeous arts center into its future as a debt-free gift to the public...
